One in 37 London homes is empty

London has about 3.85 million homes. In 2025, 105,138 of them were empty, roughly one in 37. That is 81% more than in 2016. Homes can be empty for many reasons, from repairs and probate to redevelopment or owners simply leaving them unused.

Some vacancies last only a short time. But in 2025, 47,287 London homes had been empty for more than six months, up 138% since 2016. Empty properties can also attract vandalism and create problems for neighbours and local services.
